Outline Engineering is at the centre of society. Engineering has shaped the way that we live and the world that we live in. But there is no doubt that
...
engineering has contributed to some of the most pressing problems faced by society. The most critical of these is climate change, the result of our use of carbon-based energy in transport, homes and industry. Tackling these problems requires engineering ingenuity and skill. It requires the individual engineer to be at the centre of society, focusing on the practical, pressing problems of today. The challenge for engineer is to find ways of reducing our energy consumption and to produce energy by means that minimise the production of greenhouse gases and limit other negative environmental effects. The engineer of the future will be required to develop a broad set of skills to tackle these issues – both the technical skills to produce engineering solutions and a wider set of skills to understand the issues facing society. In this lecture,

Key speakers: Martin Wheatley, Programme Director, Environment and Planning, Local Government Association, UK Dr David Strong, Chief Executive, Inbuilt Consulting Ltd, UK Key benefits: Provide delegates with an overview of current thinking in this sector, gaining an insight into policy implementation, emerging technologies, practical application and consumer benefits Look into how we plan to achieve zero carbon homes by 2016, and question what policies will begin to deliver a zero carbon housing stock, and over what timescale. Review and present novel engineering solutions to provide low and ultimately zero carbon buildings. This seminar will provide delegates with the opportunity to: Be briefed on the current thinking in this sector Network with the people tasked with delivering low carbon buildings Debate future prospects in this are
