The Rail Sector in the twenty-first century faces many challenges, including the need to meet the demand for increased capacity and increased safety whilst ... satisfying commercial pressures. EPSRC believes that research can play a vital role in helping the industry to meet these challenges, and has worked with the national Rail Research Strategy Steering Group (RRSSG), led by Department for Transport and including representatives from many organisations in the rail industry and academia, to establish a UK Centre for Rail Systems Research. ‘Rail Research UK: the universities' centre for railway systems research' will work alongside industry with the aim of creating a world-class rail system for the UK. The £7 million centre involves 12 research groups from 7 universities and is jointly led by the Universities of Birmingham and Southampton.
