As the rest of the automotive industry looked back over decades of growth enjoyed by the Japanese carmaker, Toyota was looking forward, unveiling its Global Vision 2020, an investment plan in which millions of pounds are poured into cutting-edge technologies. Forget the past, was the message. Toyota will spend its fortune developing single-seat hybrid vehicles, fuel cells, next-generation batteries, bio-fuels and the commercialisation of humanoid helper robots. If rivals were scoffing, they did so discreetly. While the Detroit giants lose money, their Japanese rival continues to generate colossal profits.
