  Google has unveiled software it hopes will power a variety of future mobile phones and boost the web on the move. The software could lead to cheaper phones as it is designed to speed up the process of ... making mobile services. The firm is working with four mobile manufacturers - Samsung, HTC, Motorola and LG - but a Google branded phone was not announced. The first phones using the so-called Google "software stack" will be available in the second half of 2008. "This is going to bring the internet into cell phones in a very cool way," Andy Rubin, Google's director of mobile platforms, told the Associated Press news agency. Mr Rubin's firm, called Android, was bought by Google in 2005 and the software it developed forms the basis of the new stack. Google has formed the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), made up of 34 companies, including chip manufacturers and handset makers.   Consumer demand for bandwidth could see the internet running out of capacity as early as 2010, a new study warns. US analyst firm Nemertes Research predicted a drastic slowdown as the network struggles ... to cope with the amount of data being carried on it. Such gridlock would drastically affect how people use the web and could mean the next Google or YouTube simply doesn't get off the ground, it said. The report said billions needed to be spent upgrading broadband networks. It put the figure at around $137bn ( 66bn) globally. For users, the slowdown could see a return to the bad old days of dial-up, the report predicts.   Video site YouTube is launching filtering tools to clamp down on the sharing of video without permission. The tools, called Video Identification, will block copyright material from appearing and spreading ... on the site. YouTube, which is owned by Google, is currently fighting a billion-dollar legal battle with Viacom over the spread of pirated files. The firm says it currently removes copyright works when it has been told of their existence on the website. The new tools, which are being tested, also give copyright owners the chance to leave their video on the service and to sell advertising around the content. Google and YouTube began working on the copyright protection technology six months ago and have partnered with Walt Disney and Time Warner in testing the tools.   OpenWorld They risk exposing personal and corporate data to attack, but that isn't stopping Oracle from wanting to employ Google's Gears and OpenSocial in the next version of its business software. Oracle ... has outlined plans for CRM OnDemand version 15 that appear to rely on Google Gears to run data inside desktop gadgets without firing up the CRM application itself. Anthony Lye, Oracle senior vice president of CRM OnDemand, also told OpenWorld delegates Tuesday "we want to put our applications on the internet" running as gadgets inside iGoogle that pull in data from companies' corporate portals.   Google is always experimenting with new features aimed at improving the search experience. This experiment lets you influence your search experience by adding, moving, and removing search results. When ... you search for the same keywords again, you'll continue to see those changes. If you later want to revert your changes, you can undo any modifications you've made. Note that this is an experimental feature and may be available for only a few weeks. This button (fig. 1b) will move the result to the top of the page and add this orange marker (fig. 1a) next to it so you can easily recognize it. The result(s) you promote will appear at the top whenever you search for the same keyword(s) in the future. At the bottom of the search results (fig. 1c) you can give the address of a page that's relevant to your search.   Yahoo users will soon have one place where they can manage all the services they use on the popular website. The company has begun a mammoth re-engineering project that will unify the disparate services ... Yahoo runs. It hopes the project will transform the site into a vast social network where Yahoo users can quickly find and communicate with each other. The project should also aims to make it easier for web developers to use Yahoo data and services for their own ends. Monkey magic "We are literally in the process of rewiring Yahoo from the inside out," said Ari Balogh, chief technology officer at Yahoo in a speech at the Web 2.0 conference in San Francisco. By re-engineering its internal workings it hopes to tear down the walls between its web sites and services so each user only has to visit one place to view and manage everything they do at Yahoo.
