  October 16, 2007 User data sources We get feedback from users when we’re able to do usability tests, which is not often enough. What other sources are good for user data? Companies often fail to take advantage ... of internal sources of user data. In defining requirements for the next release, do you talk to Tech Support or Customer Service to identify the most frequent or critical usability issues they’ve heard about from users? Those teams also are on the front line for hearing about new features that users want. Technical Writers and Documentation Specialists also can be gold mines of information. If those folks are not already on your team, find them and ask their thoughts. Chances are, the things they have a hard time documenting are good issues to be explored. Marketing and Product Management might have valuable data for you from surveys, focus groups, interviews, etc. If your organization has a Training group, ask them what’s working and what the users want changed.   Man it has been crazy busy as of late…lots of projects…not enough time. Sorry for the lack of articles!! Ok…so one of my latest projects has been a bit different. They have an old Access database that ... they have been using for years as an admin tool to keep track of their clients. A lot of work has been put into this system so they didn’t want to throw it away, but at the same time they wanted to ease the load of the admins by allowing the clients to update their own information over the web. So basically what they needed was a website that talked to their server and updated their info behind the scenes. Sounds like a job for web service right? Yup, but times are changing with the whole MS web service thing…with .NET 3 and 3.5 the new concept of WCF has been introduced. Now WCF (Windows Communication Foundation) can do A LOT of different stuff, but today I am going to give a quick lesson on how to setup and use WCF services in place of a traditional web service. In the introduction to ... this book I described the process of stumbling upon or being recommended to a web service. You arrive eager to dive in and start engaging and what’s the first thing that greets you? A form. We can do better. In fact, I believe we can get people engaged with digital services in a way that tells them how such services work and why they should care enough to use them. I also believe we can do this without explicitly making them fill out a sign-up form as a first step. But before we get into the potential of gradual engagement (your path out of sign-in “dullery”), let’s look at how the process of engaging with an online service typically works.
