  Social networking sites may be revolutionising internet communication, and creating new and exciting opportunities in both leisure and business, but is this Brave New World as democratic and inclusive ... as it appears? Pioneering research by national computing and disability charity, AbilityNet , of five of the most popular sites, shows that, in contrast to their apparent universal appeal, they are effectively locking out disabled visitors, the majority of whom can t even register, let alone participate in the on-line communities they wish to join. This gross oversight is not only unethical, it is also clearly in contravention of the Disability Discrimination Act (1999). As well as extensive review by AbilityNet consultants, feedback was also compiled by survey responses from AbilityNet s team of 100 disabled end user testers. In the introduction to ... this book I described the process of stumbling upon or being recommended to a web service. You arrive eager to dive in and start engaging and what’s the first thing that greets you? A form. We can do better. In fact, I believe we can get people engaged with digital services in a way that tells them how such services work and why they should care enough to use them. I also believe we can do this without explicitly making them fill out a sign-up form as a first step. But before we get into the potential of gradual engagement (your path out of sign-in “dullery”), let’s look at how the process of engaging with an online service typically works.   One assumption implicit in current usability practice is that one-usability-fits-all, or, more specificly, what is usable for me is what is usable for you and is usable for the rest of the world. This ... is Usability 1.0. So at least part of the definition of Usability 2.0 will be an interface accommodating different individuals in the way that suits them. This is a daunting task, but this should not deter us at least to try to do this, or think how it might be done. Obvious contenders for 'difference' will be demographic data such as age, gender, geography, etc. but I think that as we look for cues to identify difference we will find that users choices of content and navigation may tell us more about what is in their heads that who (age, gender, geography...) they are. One way that we are trying to get a handle on this is by thinking in terms of Myers-Briggs Psychological Types.
