  Just when you thought the security risks of the iPhone couldn't get any worse, we discover this . According to one member of the Hackint0sh forum, Apple is using the iPhone to spy on its users. Here is ... a look at the unconfirmed claim from Gizmodo: The evidence in the code shows that the Stocks and Weather applications send your IMEI number the unique number which identifies your iPhone and is tied to your personal information to Apple, along with the nature of the information you are looking at . While there's no evidence that Apple actually uses this information for any purpose, good or evil, the code shows that every time you try to access a detailed information on whatever stock, your IMEI will be sent embedded in the URL. This could be cross-referenced with IP location and the information in Apple or its partner's databases to gather extremely valuable data for marketing purposes.   Almost half of British consumers say they would never buy an iPhone at £269 ($557), and 26% say they like it but it's too expensive by Natasha Lomas The cost of an iPhone is proving to be a sticking point ... for UK consumers, according to a survey. The Apple handset's not-so-dinky £269 price-tag is putting off swathes of potential buyers, according to a poll by market research company GfK NOP which surveyed 500 people across the UK. Almost half (46 per cent) of consumers polled said they would never buy an iPhone at that price. While a further 26 per cent said although they like the look of the phone it's simply too expensive. Just two per cent said they are considering adding it to their Christmas list. UK consumers willing to shell out for the hardware must sign up to an 18-month contract with O2, Apple's UK iPhone partner.   Apple yesterday launched its thinnest ever MacBook laptop amidst claims that the light weight laptop underlined its recent commitments to improve the environmental credentials of its technology.   Apple has approached some major labels in an effort to expand the number of ringtones and other content it offers iPhone users through iTunes. Citing sources, notes the company to have commenced such negotiations, ... which are described as “very active right now”, with the proviso that “a final deal has not been set.” Industry insiders expect Apple to introduce the ramped-up mobile content collection through iTunes in June. Apple is reportedly also looking to make answer tones available for purchase through its service - these are tones people hear when calling someone up and waiting for an answer.   Researchers have reported a vulnerability in Apple 's Leopard operating system that the company had already patched. Heise Security said in a news posting that it had found the flaw in Apple's Mail application. ... The vulnerability lies in the way Mail handles image attachments. An attacker could take executable code and rename it as a .jpg file. Mail would then run the code without the user even being aware that an application had been started. This could allow an attacker to distribute malicious code to users disguised as an image attachment. Heise Security said that, while the unpatched vulnerability is unique to Apple's latest operating system, it is hardly new. Apple patched the same flaw for Leopard's predecessor, MacOS 10.4 Tiger, in early 2006. When a user attempts to open the attachment in Tiger, a warning is displayed that the file is an executable and not an image.   Apple is getting a head start on its house cleaning before the New Year. The Cupertino-based Apple released 31 year-end patches Monday afternoon, addressing issues in its Mac OS X operating system as well ... as the test version of its Safari browser. The latest round of updates was the largest so far this year, covering more than 40 detected vulnerabilities. Apple has issued a total of nine security updates in 2007 encompassing about 200 bugs. Security professionals recommend that users install the newly released updates as soon as possible, particularly emphasizing the need to repair any vulnerability remotely exploitable over the Web. "This was a huge batch of patches," said Jon Orbeton, strategic product manager for IronPort. "The going theory is as the user population of Apple continues to increase they become a more significant target for the attackers."
