According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), it is estimated that in 2007 there will be over 1.4 million new cases of cancer (of ... any type) and over 550,000 deaths from cancer in the United States (you can download a detailed ; ppt download, 808 KB) from the American Cancer Society. This makes cancer the second deadliest disease category, after heart diseases. But while the mortality rates for heart diseases have dropped by more than half from 1950 to 2004, and other major disease categories show similar trends, cancer death rates have stayed pretty much the same. Shocking but true, if you are a male living in the U.S., your lifetime probability of developing some type of cancer is 1 in 2. If you are female, your probability is 1 in 3.   If you tend to hold your mobile phone on your cheek or cheekbone when you're talking on it, you might want to reconsider that habit. A team of researchers has found that holding a mobile phone like that ... can lead to an increase in the amount of potentially dangerous electromagnetic waves absorbed into the brain and other body parts. The electronics engineering team led by Prof. Kim Youn-myung at Dankook University said Sunday that they experimented with 12 kinds of handsets to determine how much energy is absorbed from the handsets. They found that the specific absorption rate (SAR) varied by as much as three times depending on how and where the phone is held to the face. According to the study, the lower the microphone of the handset is placed from the mouth and the closer the handset is held to the cheek, the higher the SAR.   From our ANI Correspondent Washington, October 13: Scientists at Harvard Medical School have found that a new nanoparticle can multitask as a drug courier and a delivery reporter by glowing, when it finds ... or enters tumour cells. They say that the technique may enable doctors to see exactly which cells have successfully received a drug, once it is approved for use in humans. About 1000th of the width of a human hair, 'Quantum dots' are reflective crystals that show much promise as medicinal tools due to their extremely bright fluorescence, and the ability to carry other molecules on their surface. Omid Farokhzad of Harvard Medical School and his colleagues used cell culture experiments to create quantum dots that switch this fluorescence on when they enter the target cells, and delivered the drug. The researcher has revealed that the key to the design are molecules called aptamers, which sit on the quantum dot's surface.
