  Royal Mail Group employees lead the way in carbon offsetting 15/01/2008 Woodland conservation charity The Woodland Trust is challenging businesses to follow Royal Mail Group s example in enabling its people ... to offset their carbon emissions by planting trees. Already 130 employees from Royal Mail, Post Office Ltd and Parcelforce Worldwide have signed up to the newly launched scheme to give money direct from their wage packets to the Woodland Trust, which will enable the charity to plant and look after 2,500 trees in its 1,000 UK woods. To find out how many trees the employees would have to plant to offset their annual carbon footprint and to get tips about how to reduce their emissions they used a revolutionary new carbon calculator called Ollie. This calculator, developed by Royal Mail, asks employees about their home energy usage, as well as car and air travel before calculating how many trees will need to be planted to help offset their carbon footprints.   What an incredibly stupid idea. "Carbon offsetting" is a scam -depending on the calculations of people who have no incentive to get their answers right so that they can print "indulgences" for sinners. ... This proposal wopuld make the purchasing of such indulgences, from the likes of Mr A Daley, compislry (which destroys the moral "benefit") & give the profits to Daley (rather than make it a source of revenue for the current church of eco-fascism (though I acknowledge the Saint Al of the Convenient Lie owns an indulgence selling company). The fact is we are not facing catastrophic warming or indeed any of the other "environmentalist" catastrophes we have been promised over the last 4 decades - live with it & get some more interesting "sins".   The idea that holiday makers should pay to offset the carbon emissions produced by their flights still has a long way to go before it is accepted. New research shows that a more than a third of travellers ... (35 per cent) would not be prepared to pay an extra £20 on top of the cost of their holidays to compensate for environmental damage. Furthermore, 59 per cent of those polled said they would not cut down on the number of holidays they take in order to cut carbon emissions. The research was carried out by BLM Media. BLM Media business director Chris Armond, said: "The green message is not getting through to holidaymakers who appear to value their vacations more than the environment." The research also found that holiday makers are staying away from high street travel agents in greater numbers than ever before, preferring to use the internet.   Virgin Atlantic is to provide passengers with a unique chance to offset their flight's carbon footprint, it has been revealed. This timely move by the airline to introduce Gold Standard credits, which ... it claims is the only standard that guarantees a positive environmental impact. The company also claims that it is the only airline to commit to the Gold Standard credits, which have been endorsed by over 49 worldwide organisations including environmental groups. Further evidence that environmentalism is taking grip of the tourism industry is found in New Zealand, where the government has announced its industry blueprint for the next eight years.   The government last week unveiled a carbon offsetting fund designed to offset the transport-related carbon emissions generated by a wide range of different public sector departments and organisations, ... including central government departments, Transport for London and the Royal Household. DEFRA said government-funded projects will be undertaken in the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, India, China and Brazil that "would ensure that the carbon footprint of Government air travel was neutralised by ensuring emissions were avoided elsewhere". It added that the government fund, which will be managed by EEA Fund Management Ltd , is the first of its kind in the world and will offset all official air travel from central government since 2006 and all future air travel emissions from up to 40 public sector organisations. But with the new Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS), ... launched in London last week, it's hoped that carbon offsets will win back their credibility and be given a much sought-after framework. Offset programs are already widely used and the market is expected to grow to $4 billion over the next five years. So how do they work? Well basically if a corporation wants to be carbon neutral it might, for example, give money to an organisation that will invest in projects that reduce pollution, such as a renewable energy project in developing country. The carbon dioxide emissions that are eliminated by that project can be sold and traded on carbon markets. However, some of the projects have come under scrutiny and received some skepticism.   Stop this greenwash Says Checkout editor Fiona Briggs Are you dreaming of a green Christmas? Frankly, no, but that s the catchy title of a press release that s just landed in my inbox. It s promoting a ... website that promises to offset carbon as I do my Christmas shopping at a host of UK retailers on-line. Furthermore, it helpfully points out that if I do my shopping on-line, I m simultaneously reducing the emissions I would be making by driving to the shops. Argh! I know climate change and saving the planet is important (see also Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones column this month and Anna Cureton s interview with Ecover) but I m increasingly becoming frustrated by greenwash that is colouring our every waking move as well as everything that can be moved.   A cartoon in The New York Times brilliantly captured the mentality behind the latest green trend. It showed a man kneeling at the confessional praying, “Forgive me, but I have SUV'd.” The minister takes ... the proffered bag of money and replies, “Go thy way, thy sins are offset.” You too can be forgiven of your carbon emitting sins and achieve the exalted status of being “carbon neutral” without trading in your SUV or cancelling that overseas vacation. It worked for Al Gore, producer of the docudrama An Inconvenient Truth. When bloggers drew attention to Al's monster house, he conveniently purchased “carbon offsets” to fend off criticism that could have cost him the Nobel Prize. Hillary Clinton claims to be using some of her campaign donations to offset emissions from her big campaign jet.
