  Abstract: Updated Consumer Inventory Pinpoints Surge in Health & Fitness Products, Use of Silver Nanotechnology, Not Just for Geeks Washington, DC | Posted on October 2nd, 2007 Say "nanotechnology," and ... geeks imagine iPhones, laptops and flash drives. But more than 60 percent of the 580 products in a newly updated inventory of nanotechnology consumer products are such "un-geeky" items as tennis racquets, clothing, and health products. Maintained by the Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies at , the updated inventory includes Head NanoTitanium Tennis Racquets, Eddie Bauer Water Shorts with Nano-Dry technology, Nano-In Foot Deodorant Powder/Spray, and Burt's Bees sunscreen with "natural Titanium Dioxide mineral micronized into a nano sized particle." Since the Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies launched the world's first online inventory of manufacturer-identified nanotech goods in March 2006, the number of items has increased 175 percent-from 220 to 580 products.   Brave new risks of nanotechnology

  Never underestimate the ability of an American consumer to overestimate risk: when it comes to food, toys and drugs, we Americans think we have a fundamental constitutional right to total safety. A dab ... of lead paint here, a spot of e-coli there, the slightest whiff of risk (however infinitesimally small) spells doom in the market. Consumer hysteria feeds on itself, and soon the whole nation is throwing out its toys. But the panic over Chinese imports, which could spawn years of lawsuits and reams of government regulations, may pale by comparison with an even bigger consumer crisis on the horizon: the battle over the risks and rewards of nanotechnology.   Materials in the form of nanoparticles are already in use in a number of different industrial sectors. It is easy to see why. They can endow inexpensive support materials with advanced properties at a ... fraction of the price, or be used where existing technologies cannot provide a solution. The potential benefits and markets are huge, predicted to account for 31% of the global nanotechnology market in 2015 (approximately 340 billion USD p.a.). It impacts everything from pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, to electronics, energy, transport, textiles, and the construction industry. However, there are still obstacles to overcome.   Reliably detecting foodborne pathogens with nanotechnology and encoding/decoding techniques

  Every few months you can read about a recall of food items, be it fresh spinach of bottled infant formula, due to contamination with salmonella, E. coli or some other foodborne pathogen. A pathogen is ... a an organism that causes disease in another organism. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that foodborne diseases cause 76 million illnesses, 325,000 hospitalizations, and 5,000 deaths each year. In 2000, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimated the costs associated with five major bacterial foodborne pathogens to be $6.9 billion. The Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) 2005 Food Code states that the estimated cost of foodborne illness is $10--$83 billion annually (source).   ( Nanowerk Spotlight ) Shuttles - whether the space shuttle, an airport shuttle bus, or a loom shuttle - basically do one thing: they transport cargo (astronauts, passengers, thread) from one point to ... another on a controlled route. Although not always called shuttles, the basic concept is critical to modern transportation systems and is used by nearly every society. The concept of the shuttle has been used for centuries from Egyptian barges to Roman railways and canals. Even before these inventions, however, nature employed molecular shuttles in biological organisms. In molecular shuttles, kinesin proteins propel cargo (such as organelles) along hollow tubes called microtubules. Cells use these motors to transport cargo to highly specific destinations, in order to regulate levels of macromolecules and processes, much like a train along a track.
