  Electric traction systems Q. How does electric traction work? In OHE, or overhead electrification systems, the supply of electricity is through an overhead system of suspended cables known as the catenary ... . A contact wire or contact cable actually carries the electricity; it is suspended from or attached to other cables above it which ensure that the contact cable is at a uniform height and in the right position. In the following the term catenary is loosely used even when talking about the contact wire. The loco uses a pantograph , a metal structure which can be raised or lowered, to make contact with the overhead contact cable and draw electricity from it to power its motors. (Usually it goes first through a transformer and not directly to the motors.) The pantograph has one or two blades , shoes or collector pans that actually slide against the contact wire.   Most electrification systems use overhead wires, but third rail is an option up to about 1200 V. While use of a third rail does not require the use of DC, in practice all third-rail systems use DC because ... it can carry 41% more power than an AC system operating at the same peak voltage. Third rail is more compact than overhead wires and can be used in smaller-diameter tunnels, an important factor for subway systems. Third rail systems can be designed to use top contact, side contact, or bottom contact. Top contact is less safe, as the live rail is exposed to people treading on the rail unless an insulating hood is provided. Side- and bottom-contact third rail can easily have safety shields incorporated, carried by the rail itself. Uncovered top-contact third rails are vulnerable to disruption caused by ice, snow, and fallen leaves.   Abstract; Recently, various electrical equipment and radio equipment are being used in a wide range. Therefore, radio interference due to disturbance waves radiated from such equipment are now public concerns ... in general. The problem of these radio interference phenomena is discussed internationally, and many international standards have been established on the measuring methods and limits for the strength of radiated disturbance waves. Electric traction systems will potentially radiate disturbance waves to cause radio interference, because they are using high electric power. IEC International Special Committee on Radio Interference (CISPR) and IEC Technical Committee 9 (IEC/TC9: Railway Applications) are separately standardizing the measuring method and limits for Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) on electric traction systems.   The DC motor is similar to look at externally but there are differences in construction, particularly because the DC motor has a commutator and br /ushes which the AC motor does not. Nose Suspended Motor ... The following diagram shows the layout of the traditional DC motor mounted in a bogie as a "nose suspended motor". In electric trains or locomotives, the DC motor was traditionally mounted in the bogie frame supported partially by the axle which it drove and partially by the bogie frame. The motor case was provided with a "nose" which rested on a br /acket fixed to the transom of the bogie. It was called a "nose suspended motor" (see diagram above) and is still common around the world. Its main disadvantage is that part of the weight rests on the axle and is therefore unsprung.   BESPOKE SIMULATION Software has been employed by the railways industry, and in traction engineering in particular, since mainframes with paper tape and card readers became commonplace in the late 1960's. ... At that time Universities and large organizations monopolised the scare computing resources. While companies were writing their own COBOL business programs, academics and students applied the scientific based FORTRAN language to research problems. This provided the opportunity to replace restrictive analogue simulations with digital computer simulations of greater complexity.
