  Social Computing Magazine has posted an interesting article on the success of Facebook, . Why has it done so well, and what is it in us that keeps us pinned to that site? 1. Collecting. The collection ... of friends is psychologically like that of collecting stamps or hockey cards. It sounds pretty cynical, but I caught myself doing this. I saw someone on Facebook that I knew from years ago who I was never really friends with, more just knew and was uncomfortable around. Suddenly, I felt compelled to be friends with on Facebook. Do I care enough about this person to be in contact, at all? No. But if that person becomes my “Friend”, then I’ll have more of them.   The founders of ConnectU have accused Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg of stealing their idea, and in February, the two companies reached a secret agreement involving cash and stock. But ConnectU later backed ... out of the deal, claiming it was unenforceable, and Facebook turned back to the courts. According to case documents, ConnectU argued the deal was bogus in part because Facebook lied about its valuation when the Microsoft pact went through. "The term sheet and settlement agreement is also unenforceable because it was procured by Facebook's fraud," the court papers say. "Indeed, based on a formal valuation resolution approved by Facebook's board of directors but concealed from ConnectU, the stock portion of the purported agreement is worth only one-quarter of its apparent value based on Facebook's public press releases."   Businesses are missing out on the huge potential that social networks present, a leading information technology company has warned. Researchers for Gartner found that huge opportunities for improving the ... management of large firms exist. "Businesses which harness how employees use these sites stand to increase savings, productivity and profits," said Gartner researcher Jeffrey Mann. He told the BBC the challenge was how to apply this to the corporate world. The Gartner survey discovered that social networking sites, instant messaging email, chat and file sharing are attracting significant levels of interest online. Their work was undertaken across 18 countries and territories between October and December of last year. It found that 38% of more than 4,000 PC and mobile phone users connect to sites like MySpace and Facebook via PCs. Single people and teenagers and more men than women came top in terms of usage.   Study: Women Outnumber Men on Most Social Networks - ReadWriteWeb

  Online reputation company Rapleaf has released a new study of 49.3 million people, revealing gender and age data about social network users. On most of the main social networks - including MySpace, Facebook, ... Bebo, Hi5 - women outnumber men by a considerable amount. On Facebook, the 18-24 age group is largest, with 1,685,029 women in that age group compared to 977,753 men. In MySpace, the same age group dominates, with 7,091,214 women and 5,226,788 men. The only social networks studied that didn't have more women than men in the 18-24 year old group were venerable old LinkedIn (where incidentally the 25-34 age group was tops) and a site called Perfspot. Other highlights: Women ages 14-24 dominate activity on social networks and have more friends than men of the same ages. Men ages 35+ are more active and have more friends than women of the same ages. The average social network user has 2-25 friends.
