  US sees first airliner flight with laser defences | The Register

  US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) trials of laser missile-dazzler defences on airliners have passed another milestone, with armaments maker BAE Systems announcing that its "JetEye" gear has made ... its first scheduled passenger flight. The JetEye-equipped plane, a Boeing 767 operated by American Airlines, made a routine trip from New York to Los Angeles. "BAE Systems worked closely with DHS and the airline industry to develop an effective response to potential terrorist threats," said Burt Keirstead, JetEye program director for BAE Systems in New Hampshire. "It took a combination of ingenuity and perseverance to get to this point, and everyone involved is proud of the results." Two further American 767s will also be equipped with JetEye for the trial, which is designed to find out the effects of the gear on airline operations and finances.   As anyone who has ever gotten a speeding ticket knows (full disclosure: I never have... knock on wood), you often have very little ammo to fight back against the reading that the all-knowing radar gun ... spat out. But thanks to more sophisticated and affordable technology, that could be changing. A California teen is using GPS data to attempt to get himself off the hook for allegedly going 17 miles per hour over the speed limit, simultaneously casting doubt on the accuracy of police radars and giving hope to tech-savvy drivers. The story started out simply enough. 18-year-old Shaun Malone was caught by a police radar going 62 in a 45 mph zone last summer. Under most circumstances, most people would assume that this was all simply true—it's not unheard of for teenagers to speed, after all. Malone's parents knew differently, though.   Fujitsu develops world's first hi-def train simulator | Register Hardware

  Writing down the serial number of the 10.47 to Chichester in a notepad while standing on a cold platform is all well and good, but now you can pretend to be the actual train driver, thanks to Fujitsu, ... which has developed the world’s first HD virtual railway. Well, sort of. The system, developed by Fujitsu and simulation specialist Ongakukan, coaches future train drivers who sit in a purpose-built loco. Drivers are presented with hi-def video shot on real train lines. The images can be played back at varying speeds to represent the velocity of the engine. Presumably, leaves on the line isn’t one of the settings... Fujitsu said that because the system provides accurate responses to the operator’s movements, such as slamming on the brakes, the trainee train driver receives “an unprecedented level of realism”.   Boeing robot whisper-copter team claims record | The Register

  Mammoth US arms'n'aerospace firm Boeing has announced test successes for its prototype robot whisper-copter, the A160T "Hummingbird". The company believes it has broken the world endurance record for unmanned ... aircraft in the A160T's weight class with a flight lasting longer than 18 hours. The possibly record-breaking test took place last week at the Yuma proving grounds in Arizona. Boeing say that the droid-copter landed with better than 90 minutes worth of fuel remaining, and carried a 300-pound payload during the flight. "The aircraft performed flawlessly, flying un-refueled longer than any other current unmanned rotorcraft. Our customers are excited about this." Those customers include the US forces, and DARPA - the Pentagon's famous deathboffinry bureau, whose brainboxes prefer to avoid the beaten track*.
