By contrast, Japan is a broadband paradise with the fastest and cheapest Internet connections in the world. Nearly eight million Japanese have a fiber optic line at home that is as much as 30 times speedier than a typical DSL line. But while that speed is a boon for Japanese users, industry analysts and some companies question whether the push to install fiber is worth the effort, given the high cost of installation, affordable alternatives and lack of services that take advantage of the fast connections.   Cisco to buy stake in femtocell maker ip.acess - International Herald Tribune

  In a sign of widening interest in femtocells, small devices that improve indoor cellphone coverage, the British femtocell maker ip.access was expected to announce Wednesday that Cisco had become one of ... its shareholders. The companies did not give details on the size of the Cisco investment or how big of a stake the U.S. company would hold. The British company's investors already include funds run by Intel and Motorola as well as Amadeus Capital Partners, the venture capital fund. Femtocells have been gaining attention recently not only as a potential way of improving indoor cellphone coverage, but also as a method of moving telephone traffic off congested cellular networks and on to their fixed-line counterparts that have more capacity and are usually faster. That way, people gathered at the family hub can satisfy their digital needs along with nutritional ones. ... Hewlett-Packard's new TouchSmart IQ770 PC, which retails for $1,699 in the United States, is designed for that kitchen of the future, where people turn on the computer - along with the coffeepot - and then check the screen for the weather, ball scores and the family calendar as they prepare breakfast. The calendar on the TouchSmart is easy to use. Entries can be written on the touch-sensitive screen with a finger or stylus, or entered on a keyboard, so that everyone knows what is ahead during the day, from the dentist at 9 in the morning to the parent-teacher's association meeting at 7 in the evening.   The bill looms for Broadband Britain

  Richard Wray, communications editor The Guardian Tuesday September 25 2007 Two years ago BT agreed to separate the millions of phone lines in the nation's skirting boards from the rest of its business ... to create a standalone company that would deal equally with any operator that wanted to get into the digital home of the future. Since then Openreach, as that new business became known, has handed over control of more than 3m of the UK's near 30m phone lines to rivals such as Carphone Warehouse's TalkTalk and Tiscali, so they can provide services from home telephony and broadband internet access to TV. A further 5m BT lines are being rented by rivals, using BT's wholesale product, for broadband services. As a result, the UK residential telephony market is fast becoming one of the most competitive in the world. But the set-up may soon change again since Ofcom is preparing a fundamental rethink of the UK broadband market.
