  UK manufacturing remains healthy

  Activity in the UK's manufacturing sector remains healthy despite the turbulence in financial markets, a snapshot survey shows today. The CBI's monthly industrial trends report showed that the balance ... of companies reporting above normal levels in their order books was higher than those reporting below normal levels. The balance of 6% was slightly lower than last month's 12-year high, but remains higher than the average for the first half of 2007. "This survey took place against the backdrop of severe turbulence and uncertainty in the financial markets and rising interest rates for borrowing. Nevertheless the manufacturing sector has continued to show encouraging signs of growth and the wider economy beyond the financial markets is in good shape," said Ian McCafferty, chief economic adviser at the CBI.   UK manufacturers recorded their strongest quarter for sales in almost two decades during the three months to the end of September, dampening hopes of an early cut in the Bank of England base rate. According ... to the British Chambers of Commerce's (BCC) third-quarter survey, published yesterday, its net sales index rose to +36 per cent over the quarter, the highest since the index was launched back in 1989, and up 5 points since the second quarter. The number of manufacturers expecting to raise their prices also leapt from +24 to +32 per cent. However, positive news in the manufacturing sector was offset by signs of a slowdown in the service sector, where both domestic sales and exports fell during the period. The BCC, which represents local businesses, said it believed the overall picture was one of a weakening UK economy, and called on the Bank of England to cut rates next month.   Landfill methane providing 60 percent of BMW plant's energy

  GREENVILLE, S.C. — The BMW plant in Greer is getting more than 60 percent of its energy from the methane gas generated at a nearby landfill, officials said. The operation, in cooperation with the Texas ... landfill firm Waste Management, captures the methane gas, which otherwise would escape into the atmosphere, and converts it to energy. Waste Management, which has gas-to-energy projects in more than 20 states, announced recently that it intends to create about 60 additional renewable energy facilities within five years — including two more in South Carolina. The two new plants will be located at landfills in Dorchester and Jasper Counties, a spokesman said. The BMW project and Waste Management's gas-to-energy plant in Kershaw County generate nearly 16 megawatts of electricity, or enough to power at least 15,000 homes for a year.   BOEING wants to build a larger research and development presence in Australia to complement its $800 million investment in local defence and component manufacturing businesses. Australia is now the corporation's ... largest footprint outside the US with about 4000 employees scattered around 26 different sites and annual revenues climbing towards the billion-dollar mark. Boeing's military business in Australia is booming - the company now supplies a large part of the RAAF's new airborne capability, ranging from strategic airlift and airborne early-warning aircraft to combat fighters and helicopters.
