At the moment, the device can perform simple sums - the team calls the novel calculator the "leech-ulator". But their aim is to devise a new generation of fast and flexible computers that can work out for themselves how to solve a problem, rather than having to be told exactly what to do. Professor Bill Ditto, at the Georgia Institute of Technology, is leading the project and says he is amazed that today's computers are still so dumb. "Ordinary computers need absolutely correct information every time to come to the right answer," he says. "We hope a biological computer will come to the correct answer based on partial information, by filling in the gaps itself."   CES USB 3.0, the upcoming version of the universal add-on standard re-engineered for the HD era, made a small appearance at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). It wasn't demonstrated in operation, but ... we did get to see what the new connectors look like. Not, alas, the optical one, we have to report, but the electrical connectors. On show in public for – we believe – the first time, we got to see the new full-size connector, the socket it slips into and the new mini-socket. You can see the optical port here . Dubbed SuperSpeed USB, the third major incarnation of the serial bus standard is set to deliver data transfer speeds of around 4.7Gb/s - ten times today's 480Mb/s limit. The new spec will be compatible with older USB 1.1 and 2.0 products, cables and connectors, and you can see from the diagram of the standard connector how that's achieved: the extra pins are placed behind the USB 1.1/2.0 ones.   Robots need to interact with their surroundings. We make them see with cameras and measure their environments with other sensors. Based on these measurements, robots control themselves with algorithms ... also developed by research/ students/ enthusiasts. Monitoring the capture control and sensor processing software in unifying frameworks, will enable re-use, fine tuning and better performance of the robot. It has been said that the HAL 9000 computer is the most empathetic character in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Even though his "nervous breakdown" turns him into a murderer, his eventual "death" by disconnection is sadder than any other death in the movie. But almost everyone who has seen the movie has wondered: what exactly caused HAL's breakdown? Robots will become more sophisticated. With increased logic comes responsibility.   Details of how to copy the Oyster cards used on London's transport network can be published, a Dutch judge has ruled. The ruling overturns an injunction to suppress the information won by NXP - makers ... of the travel smartcards used in London and many other cities. The injunction was sought in June 2008 after Dutch researchers demonstrated how to copy cards and travel free on the London Underground. The researchers plan to publish their research in October. Cracked cards The security weaknesses in the Oyster card were discovered by Prof Bart Jacobs and colleagues from Radboud University, Nijmegen in March 2008. The weaknesses centre around the chip, called the Mifare Classic, that sits at the heart of the contactless card system. As well as being used on 17 million Oyster cards, the Mifare chip is also used in Hong Kong's travel network, and is the basis of the Dutch Rijkspas smartcard.
