  Berners-Lee urged the mobile web community to take note of the experience of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3). Supplier patents had made it difficult for the World Wide Web Consortium, which has a strict ... open IP environment, to bring wider functionality and capabilities to the web. But, Berners-Lee said, supplier CEOs eventually realised that although they might have 95% of a select market with their web products, they stood to gain about 60% of a considerably larger market if they opened up their patents to the W3C. Patents turn technology into a gravy train for suppliers, said Beners-Lee. They make a lot of money, but there is no connectivity, he said. In fact, most people skimming ... a Web page don't even see links that read "click here" because they have no semantic attachments. What does that mean? It means that "click here" doesn't reach out and grab your readers and make them want to click on the link. When I see the words "click here" as a link, often my first thought is "who's gonna make me?" and I move on, not clicking on it.   Scientists Create Their Own Web 2.0 Network With NanoHUB

  Teenagers may not have heard about it, but there's a Web 2.0 site that's a hit with scientists and engineers. nanoHUB.org, a so-called science gateway for nano-science and nanotechnology housed at Purdue ... University, is taking the tools of Web 2.0 and applying them, along with a few tricks of its own, to further nano-scholarly pursuits. The result is a Web site that is a required bookmark for people who get excited about algorithms, carbon nanotubes, nanoelectronics and quantum dots -- the current hot topics on the site. Soon, other science disciplines, such as pharmacy and medical research, will be launched using the same technology.
