  Depends how big the barge is I think. Where coastal transport, the Manchester Ship Canal, or the Thames Estuary can be used for large barges then I expect this is environmentally friendly. The sort of ... barge you'll get going down the West Kennet Canal is another story, very much doubt this is more efficient than a train. So your 2000 miles of navigable waterways is very misleading. [Offensive? Unsuitable? Report this comment. ] I've always thought it a great shame that London has a big river running through the middle of it, and yet there's only a pretty small-scale 'public' transport ferry service. Although it is advertised as part of London Transport it is all run by private companies, and not really integrated into the charging system for the rest (33 percent off if you already have a valid ticket for the zone - what a crock!). If there were more docks along the river, and it was completely integrated into the ticket system (with no extra charges) then I would use it instead of the U   [More...] [Less...]

  Are we already shutting our minds to the consequences of climate change? By George Monbiot. Published in the Guardian 30th October 2007 A few weeks ago I read what I believe is the most important environmental ... book ever written. It is not Silent Spring, Small is Beautiful or even Walden. It contains no graphs, no tables, no facts, figures, warnings, predictions or even arguments. Nor does it carry a single dreary sentence, which, sadly, distinguishes it from most environmental literature. It is a novel, first published a year ago, and it will change the way you see the world. Cormac McCarthy’s book The Road considers what would happen if the world lost its biosphere, and the only living creatures were humans, hunting for food among the dead wood and soot.   Like George Monbiot, I too am dismayed by how carbon capture has been used as a smokescreen to confuse the public over the outrageous plan to build a new coal-fired power station at Kingsnorth, but this ... is not an excuse to condemn the technology itself (Carbon capture is turning out to be just another great green scam, March 18). In 2005 BP proposed to build a new gas-fired power station at Peterhead, capture the carbon dioxide produced and use it for enhanced oil recovery in the Miller field below the North Sea; this innovative project could have been up and running in 2009. Monbiot is wrong to suggest that the plan would have led to more carbon emissions than savings: between 1.8m and 2m tonnes of carbon dioxide would be injected each year over 20 years, producing an additional 40m-60m barrels of oil. Taking the higher numbers, 40m tonnes of carbon dioxide remains underground, while burning the oil produces approximately 20m tonnes; twice as much carbon dioxide is stored than emitted   [More...] [Less...]

  Carbon capture is turning out to be just another great green scam Cleaner technology is possible, but Labour plans to introduce it so slowly that any benefits will be lost in higher coal output 'Coal is ... so clean and fresh that the prime minister brushes his teeth with it, Downing Street said last night. Mr Brown said advances in coal technology meant it was now one of the cleanest substances on Earth, and an unrivalled remover of stains and scaling." So says the satirical website the Daily Mash. The real claims are scarcely battier. Ministers are about to decide whether to approve a new coal-burning power station at Kingsnorth in Kent. This would be the first such plant to be built in Britain since the monster at Drax was finished in 1986. As well as coal, it will burn up the government's targets, policies and promises on climate change.
