  Alan Blumlein's pioneering work in the 1930s was considered a sensation by the handful of people who knew him. "It's my considered belief he was the greatest scientist engineer I have ever known. Had he ... lived he would have been the Michael Faraday of our age," said the late Professor James McGee, a distinguished engineer in his own right, an FRS and a colleague of Blumlein. His brilliance propelled Britain to the forefront of the emerging science of audio engineering, TV and radar. But because much of his work was secret, the public are still unaware of his achievements. The BBC has uncovered a range of archive sources to tell the story of his brief but extraordinary life. Born in 1903 in London, to a Scottish mother and German father, Alan Blumlein quickly developed an obsession with engineering and, aged 7, repaired his parent's door bell and sent them a bill for 6d.   Unique recordings by the inventor of stereo have been cleaned up so the public can hear them properly for the first time. They include Sir Thomas Beecham conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO) ... at Abbey Road Studios in 1934. The recordings were made by Alan Blumlein, an EMI research engineer, whose contribution to the invention of stereo sound is only now starting to be appreciated. The early recordings have been re-engineered using digital technology so their true quality can be appreciated. Sound engineer Roger Beardsley who was responsible for the digital transfers called the recordings "incredibly historic". "They have never been properly reproduced, but we've recovered the original information that was there", he said. Blumlein lodged the patent for "binaural "sound, in 1931, in a paper which patented stereo records, stereo films and also surround sound.   Alan Blumlein made a major contribution to radar development during World War II, but was tragically killed in an air crash while engaged on tests on the H2S radar prototype. Blumlein's first post was ... with the International Western Electric Corporation in 1925, working on interference in telephone lines. In 1929 he joined Columbia Gramophone's Research Department, which merged with HMV in 1930 to form EMI. Most of Blumlein's inventions were made during his work with EMI - he took out 132 patents while with them. He made significant contributions to recording and television, including a system of stereo recording. He was EMI's Senior Engineer on the outbreak of World War II, which meant that he was transferred immediately to war project work. He adapted his stereo work to develop an acoustic direction finder for aircraft, and he worked on aircraft radar systems.
