  China says industrial output rises 17.5 percent in August

  BEIJING : China's industrial output soared 17.5 percent in August over the year-earlier period, the government said Thursday, adding to signs economic growth is racing ahead despite authorities' efforts ... to cool the boom. The August growth rate was slightly below the 18.5 percent rate reported for the first six months of the year, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. Chinese leaders, worried that runaway growth could ignite a financial crisis, are trying to restrain China's expansion, which last quarter hit a rate of 11.9 percent. The government has imposed taxes and other controls in an effort to rein in production of steel and other goods considered polluting or too energy-intensive.   Web 2.0 investors look beyond the U.S.

  For the first half of 2007, venture capitalists poured $464 million into 101 Web 2.0-focused companies around the globe. That's a 14% increase from the first half of 2006 – an increase driven by investments ... in start-ups outside of the United States., according to data complied by Dow Jones VentureOne and Ernst & Young. VentureOne defines Web 2.0 companies as those that “have a business model that revolves around a dynamic interface facilitating participation through such methods as user-created content, networking and collaboration,” according to a spokesperson for the company. “Applications include podcasting, tagging, blogs, social networking, mashups and wikis. Technologies used in these applications include: AJAX, RSS, SOA, CSS, XHTML, Atom and rich Internet applications."   Web 2.0-enabled firms to face increased security risk

  The changing nature and scale of security threats will pose more strenuous challenges for security administrators as they embrace the Web 2.0 world, according to research from WatchGuard Technologies Inc. ... The security appliance vendor's Rapid Response team has been tracking attack patterns over the last five years and has identified five key threats: DNS system attacks; viruses and malware; buggy web applications; hacking for profit; and end users. According to Steve Fallin, director of WatchGuard's Rapid Response team, the increasing range and sophistication of threats, combined with more complex architectures and the move to Web 2.0, will make the job of securing enterprise networks more difficult than ever before.
