That way, people gathered at the family hub can satisfy their digital needs along with nutritional ones. ... Hewlett-Packard's new TouchSmart IQ770 PC, which retails for $1,699 in the United States, is designed for that kitchen of the future, where people turn on the computer - along with the coffeepot - and then check the screen for the weather, ball scores and the family calendar as they prepare breakfast. The calendar on the TouchSmart is easy to use. Entries can be written on the touch-sensitive screen with a finger or stylus, or entered on a keyboard, so that everyone knows what is ahead during the day, from the dentist at 9 in the morning to the parent-teacher's association meeting at 7 in the evening.   The bill looms for Broadband Britain

  Richard Wray, communications editor The Guardian Tuesday September 25 2007 Two years ago BT agreed to separate the millions of phone lines in the nation's skirting boards from the rest of its business ... to create a standalone company that would deal equally with any operator that wanted to get into the digital home of the future. Since then Openreach, as that new business became known, has handed over control of more than 3m of the UK's near 30m phone lines to rivals such as Carphone Warehouse's TalkTalk and Tiscali, so they can provide services from home telephony and broadband internet access to TV. A further 5m BT lines are being rented by rivals, using BT's wholesale product, for broadband services. As a result, the UK residential telephony market is fast becoming one of the most competitive in the world. But the set-up may soon change again since Ofcom is preparing a fundamental rethink of the UK broadband market. Whether ... wired or wireless, there never seems to be a lack of noise coming from would-be world-changing suppliers when it comes to broadband technology delivery. On the wired front we had the copper versus fibre argument. Fibre can do the job but it is still very expensive. Copper moved from just ADSL to Metro Ethernet (which became Carrier Ethernet) and suddenly running multi-megabit connections into offices over copper is not an issue. At the same time, the wireless brigade moved out of the local area network and away from all the proprietary (and often bizarre) mobile wireless technologies used by the likes of the emergency services and announced technologies such as Wimax on the extended wireless Lan, and 3G (and beyond) for mobile.   Mobile VoIP is set to grow, but it will run over the 3G data provided by cellular handsets, rather than over Wi-Fi, according to a research report from Disruptive Analysis, which predicts 250 million users ... of 3G VoIP by 2012, compared with less than 100 million for voice on Wi-Fi. "Yes, 250 million is a surprisingly big number," said Dean Bubley of Disruptive Analysis. "I did the sums and then had to triple-check my own model. The fundamental truth, he says, is that mobile networks are moving towards LTE (or possibly UMB) and that will be all IP, so for operators "VoIP is mandatory." VoIP will allow carriers to handle more calls on their scarce spectrum and backhaul, and reduce expenses by handling all traffic as data. It will also let them offer new services such as push-to-talk and voice-integrated "mashups", says Bubley, in his report, VoIPo3G Business Models.
