  It's dead Jim! 09 Sept 2002 OK - I've had lots of good mail and suggestions for upgrading the benchmarks, or making them more fair (or biased ;-). However, these were only ever meant as a counter example ... to some other benchmarks (see the next paragraph), and I see them as so totally flawed that I don't want to spend any more time developing them. Instead I'm going to do some more "real world" style benchmarks. They will appear here at some point. This page will not be updated again. Woohoo. This page is a long overdue response to the python/java comparison by Glyph Lefkowitz (now shortened to [1]) (update 6 June 2002: I did email Glyph expecting a link from his page,as it states he would, but never got a reply. The code has been somewhat changed, mainly to make the Java code more natural. when I read the original code I was often thinking "That's not the (simplest/most natural) way to do it". I didn't feel that for the Python code, which I suspect says Good Things about the simplicity   [More...] [Less...]

Whether ... wired or wireless, there never seems to be a lack of noise coming from would-be world-changing suppliers when it comes to broadband technology delivery. On the wired front we had the copper versus fibre argument. Fibre can do the job but it is still very expensive. Copper moved from just ADSL to Metro Ethernet (which became Carrier Ethernet) and suddenly running multi-megabit connections into offices over copper is not an issue. At the same time, the wireless brigade moved out of the local area network and away from all the proprietary (and often bizarre) mobile wireless technologies used by the likes of the emergency services and announced technologies such as Wimax on the extended wireless Lan, and 3G (and beyond) for mobile.   While we’re waiting for Google to launch its own Google OS (if the rumours are true, of course), I’ve checked out 10 web operating systems and what they can do. Not many of them feel like finished and ... fully usable products, but there are some true gems among them. Admit it: you didn’t think there were that many WebOSes around, did you? Neither did I. You can find month or two old articles on the web which talk about a WebOS as a recently forged concept, yet to be realized. YouOS was practically the only one that had media coverage, so when I began the research for this article, I hoped to find five usable WebOS applications at best. I was wrong. There are over 10 fully functional WebOS applications out there, and a couple more that are announced or in closed betas. But what is a WebOS (not to be confused with another definition of the term, see here ), or a Webtop , anyway ?
