  Getting to grips with LaTeX Here are some tutorials I have written for getting up to speed with this excellent document processing system. If you are not sure why LaTeX is any good, find out the benefits ... . I wouldn't consider myself an expert, but I'm learning all the time. I recall finding it quite taxing when I started to learn LaTeX, which is why I have started these tutorials. However, I hope that my experiences plays to your advantage, since I hope I can let you into the sort of questions and problems I had when I first learning LaTeX. Online Tutorials There is now a fair amount of material to get your teeth stuck into! I am continuously adding more, especially as there are some important topics yet to be covered. Long, The Pennsylvania State University Software affects almost every aspect of our daily lives (manufacturing, banking, travel, communications, ... defense, medicine, research, government, education, entertainment, law, etc.). It is an essential part of our military systems, and it is used throughout the civilian sector, including safety-critical and mission-critical systems. In addition, the complexity of many of these systems has been growing exponentially. Unfortunately, the U.S. higher education system has not kept pace with these needs. Existing undergraduate and graduate science and engineering programs need to incorporate more material on software engineering. This is especially true for aerospace engineering, since those systems rely heavily on computation, information, communications, and software.   So you're an early adopter and you've run out to buy yourself Asus's $400 Eee PC because it seemed like a great price for a fully functional 2 pound computer that's about the size of a typical hardcover ... book (and far smaller than Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows ). But the innovative easy to use interface might get old pretty quickly if you want to do more than surf the web and create letters, spreadsheets, and PowerPoint style presentations for your friends telling them how cool you are because you have an Eee PC while they don't. Asus includes instructions for loading Windows XP onto the Eee PC, but it requires an external DVD drive, some drive compression, and you know, a copy of Windows XP. Curiously, Asus does not include any instructions for unlocking the built-in potential of Xandros Linux, the operating system that ships with the Eee PC. Whether ... wired or wireless, there never seems to be a lack of noise coming from would-be world-changing suppliers when it comes to broadband technology delivery. On the wired front we had the copper versus fibre argument. Fibre can do the job but it is still very expensive. Copper moved from just ADSL to Metro Ethernet (which became Carrier Ethernet) and suddenly running multi-megabit connections into offices over copper is not an issue. At the same time, the wireless brigade moved out of the local area network and away from all the proprietary (and often bizarre) mobile wireless technologies used by the likes of the emergency services and announced technologies such as Wimax on the extended wireless Lan, and 3G (and beyond) for mobile.
