  June 27, 2008 Lanco Group to foray into wind energy business BL reported that Lanco Group has firmed up its plans to foray into wind energy with an initial investment of nearly INR 500 crore. It is planning ... to set up a wind turbine manufacturing unit in Puducherry and has also set its eyes to establish wind farms in India, the US and Europe. Mr L Madhusudhana Rao chairman of Lanco Group said that the technology aspects would be worked out in technical collaboration from German companies. The group is targeting a commercial launch of wind energy by September 2009. He added that "Our target is to establish a total of 1,000 MW installed capacity. The group is also exploring options in solar and nuclear energy fields. It has a presence in the hydro power sector, in which it is implementing 5 projects with capacity of 742 MW, two of them have been registered as clean development mechanism projects with the Geneva based United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.   Backpack straps harvest energy to power electronics

The pack has straps made of a piezoelectric ... material that can convert the mechanical strain on the straps into electrical energy that may power or recharge portable electronics. The piezoelectric backpack straps are the latest innovation in the area of “energy harvesting,” where otherwise-wasted, ambient energy is converted into electrical energy to prolong the life of electronics. Whatever the outcome of the looming federal election, Australia will have a national emissions ... trading scheme operating from around 2011, based on economic analysis to be completed next year. But it is generally agreed that trading alone will not be enough to deliver the deep cuts in greenhouse gases required both here and overseas. Along with the debate over privatisation of government-owned energy generation and retail assets, the next big climate change policy debate confronting Australia will be about shaping a comprehensive industry strategy for energy.   Did you know.? At present over 2% of electricity produced in the UK comes from a renewable source. By the year 2010 the Government's target is to exceed 10%. Various predictions suggest we will achieve ... 50% by the year 2050. Some renewable energy sources rely on the availability of natural occurring energy. These include heat or light from the sun; wind at a suitable speed produced from complex weather systems; waves from oceans, and tides based on the relative position of the sun and earth. These cannot be turned on or off according to demand for energy; they are therefore said to suffer from intermittency. Although a degree of back-up is required to cope with intermittency, a report prepared for the Carbon Trust in 2006 identified that intermittency should not be a major problem in the UK over the next 20 years.   Overview Preliminary data indicates that total renewable energy consumption increased 7 percent between 2005 and 2006 (Table 1).
