Dr Hartmut Neven, Google's expert on image searching, was involved ... in a demonstration of quantum computing on Monday - even though most scientists are extremely doubtful that any real quantum computing took place. Google is experimenting with image searches that use the image itself, not just keywords (try adding "&imgtype=face" to the URL of any image search), but it's hit-and-miss and makes huge demands on conventional computers, because it involves trying a vast number of possible matches and solutions. In theory quantum computers could help, by applying a basic principle of quantum mechanics - that a system isolated from interaction with the rest of the world exists in every possible state at the same time. My sample size is a lot smaller, but I support 600+ PCs, and I definitely agree on two points: 1) failures correspond heavily ... to particular models, and not where/how they're used. 2) SMART is a poor predictor of failures** Though I don't work in a corporate environment, we buy PCs similarly; i.e. we buy the same Tier1 (Compaq/HP in our case) model throughout its life. They'll generally have a specific set of drives they'll spec for that PC model. Failures will tend to come from the same model drives, and within a surprisingly narrow time period. The worst ones in my memory have been: WD AC36400/AC26400/64AA, 102AA, 205AA (last 3 are the same family, I think) Seagate Medalist 6-10Gbish (These might be Conner designs since that's what they look like; they also have SeaShield) 20Gb DiamondMAX (I forget which model) WD200BB/400BB (the silver and silver/black lids, not the later all-black ones) DiamondMax Plus   [More...] [Less...]

  One of the best articles ever written about Google is from the The Sunday Times. The article tries to understand Google's latest projects by looking at what Google really wants to do in the distant future. ... And while reading the plan, you'll realize that Google's power from today doesn't mean anything compared to the envisioned plans.   It is also becoming more and more difficult to distinguish malicious from nonmalicious sites. Google recently published a paper from researching sites it crawls (see " The Ghost in the Browser "), and ... found that one in 10 websites contains a malicious payload. Most users would be hard-pressed to distinguish the malicious 10 percent from a random set of search results. Once inside the firewall, these covert applications can steal confidential data, infect other machines and launch spam or malicious attacks. The "new new" threat: Botnets The most sophisticated of these new threats are botnets. These collections of software robots known as "bots" run on compromised computers called "zombies" that can be controlled by "bot herders" through a communications infrastructure named "command and control" or "C&C" for short.   Video site YouTube is launching filtering tools to clamp down on the sharing of video without permission. The tools, called Video Identification, will block copyright material from appearing and spreading ... on the site. YouTube, which is owned by Google, is currently fighting a billion-dollar legal battle with Viacom over the spread of pirated files. The firm says it currently removes copyright works when it has been told of their existence on the website. The new tools, which are being tested, also give copyright owners the chance to leave their video on the service and to sell advertising around the content. Google and YouTube began working on the copyright protection technology six months ago and have partnered with Walt Disney and Time Warner in testing the tools.   An Open Facebook API vs Google OpenSocial - Blog Maverick

  Probably about 5 months ago I had a conversation with someone at Facebook about licensing their API. The beauty of Facebook, as opposed to Myspace and other social networks is that the people on there ... are for the most part who they say they are, and Facebook does their best to dismiss those who aren't. This simple differentiation makes the membership base of Facebook far more valuable than any other social network. When you go to my Facebook profile, you get the real me. Thats not to say I answer every profile question. I don't. I'm not going to disclose everything about myself. However, the data that is available about me is the most comprehensive, self maintained database record about me on the internet or probably anywhere. Access to that information times the however many tens of millions of Facebook active users is worth a lot of money.
