  With 40 million 3G subscribers, Japan’s NTT DoCoMo network is in a rare position to offer the rest of us a clearer vision of the hits and misses of mobile internet services. It doesn’t make for a pretty ... picture. At a briefing last week with Shuichiro Ichikoshi, one of the principal architects behind DoCoMo’s wildly successful 1999 launch of i-mode, one message became abundantly clear: content is not king. According to Mr Ichikoshi, DoCoMo’s traffic revenue outpaced content revenue yet again in the last fiscal year, this time by a margin of $11 billion to $2 billion (£5.5 billion to £1 billion). This means that eight years after the launch of i-mode, the mobile internet service available with O2 in the UK, the basic functions of talking and texting are still far more compelling to consumers than content-based services such as mobile TV, music downloads and traffic alerts.   Internet crime 'is big business' - BBC News

  Internet crime is becoming a major commercial activity, according to a report by the security firm, Symantec. Its report into threats to internet security describes underworld auction sites where bank ... details and credit cards are on sale. Commercial software used by criminals to launch attacks on websites is also being traded, the report says. It also warns that criminals are using trusted sites like MySpace and Facebook to launch attacks on users' computers. Fake banking sites The BBC's technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones said: "Until recently young hackers who spread viruses or launched attacks on computer networks were bent on mischief rather than money making." However, this latest report suggests such attacks are now part of a multi-billion dollar criminal industry. But researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology using wikis and the Semantic Web look to change the way people map and navigate their cities. The Wiki City project, run by MIT's SENSEable City Laboratory , aims to apply wiki technology to the mapmaking process. The project's ultimate product will permit anyone to upload content to a map and utilize Semantic Web principles to cross search multiple layers of information.
