  [ edit ] Development and analysis The debate about CSR has been said to have began in the early 20th century, amid growing concerns about large corporations and their power [1] . The ideas of charity and ... stewardship helped to shape the early thinking about CSR in the US. Ida Tarbell ’s 1904 work The History of the Standard Oil Company helped lead to the decision of the decision to break up the company on antitrust grounds. Similarly, Upton Sinclair ’s 1906 book The Jungle led to the passage of the Pure Food and Drugs Act and the Meat Inspection Act by the United States Congress . These can be seen as early attempts to mandate socially responsible corporate behavior. The term CSR itself came in to common use in the early 1970s although it was seldom abbreviated.
