  Seven days after the UK iPhone launch, a survey finds British consumers really don’t want all-singing, all-dancing converged multimedia phones. Just 41 percent of 500 Brits surveyed - in Universal McCann’s ... survey of 10,000 in 21 countries ( via Guardian ) - said they’d like to own a converged handset. The problem? Device fatigue - 82 percent of us already has a mobile, 48 percent a mobile music player so the new wave needs to work hard to ween us off our existing purchases. Still, only 43 percent of respondents wanted wireless internet and, though 48 percent quite fancy having video on their mobile, a full 28 percent wants music features but none of the moving pictures. Curiously, even in the normally hyper mobile-savvy Japan and Taiwain, interest in owning a converged device only bobbled around 27 percent.   Nokia sets sights on Wi-Fi phones - Times Online

  Nokia today revealed a new phone that will allow users to switch from traditional mobile networks to make calls over the internet when they are in reach of a wireless network such as a Wi-Fi hotspot. ... The 6301 is the latest handset to use unlicensed mobile access (UMA) technology, which allows users to switch between GSM cellular and WLAN networks. Nokia said the new model, which will be available through operators including Orange, would begin shipping in Europe in the fourth quarter of this year. It will cost an estimated €230 (£161), before subsidies and taxes. Interest in UMA has been steadily building this year, especially in the US, as mobile operators face increased competition from free and low-cost internet telephony services such as Skype.   A COMPANY making next-generation solar technology used to charge mobile phones yesterday announced its first order. Cardiff-based G24 Innovations – G24i – said a deal for its mobile phone chargers, centred ... around its revolutionary solar technology known as Dye Sensitised Thin Film (DST), has been made with a company in Kenya. G24i has a strategy to first target markets in the developing world, where people in remote areas have little access to reliable power sources. Company chairman Bob Hertzberg – a former speaker of the California State Assembly – has formulised the plan because of the massive need for communications technology, coupled with dependable power, in the developing world.   Google phone heralds scramble for mobile web - Times Online

  Google has fired the starting gun in a frantic race among mobile handset makers to produce what will undoubtedly be the most important phone released this year: namely, one on which the internet works. ... The emergence of the first prototypes running the search giant’s new operating system for mobiles - which vastly improves the experience of using the web on a phone - has effectively laid down the challenge for the likes of Motorola and Samsung as they race to line up phones that will take advantage of it.
