  More holes have been picked in the security measure designed to protect the privacy and data of wi-fi users. The latest attack lets criminals defeat firewalls and spy on where someone goes and what they ... do online. It comes after a series of other attacks that, experts say, have left the basic protection in wi-fi comprehensively "broken". But compatibility issues mean that many will have no alternative but to use the much weakened protection system. Lock picking The basic security measure in the technical specification for wireless networks, 802.11, is known as Wired Equivalent Privacy. WEP encrypts data flying back and forth between a computer and an access point to stop people spotting and stealing confidential information. It does this using an encryption key but numerous attacks have shown how easy it is to get hold of this key and unlock access to the wi-fi network or your data.   Internet crime 'is big business' - BBC News

  Internet crime is becoming a major commercial activity, according to a report by the security firm, Symantec. Its report into threats to internet security describes underworld auction sites where bank ... details and credit cards are on sale. Commercial software used by criminals to launch attacks on websites is also being traded, the report says. It also warns that criminals are using trusted sites like MySpace and Facebook to launch attacks on users' computers. Fake banking sites The BBC's technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones said: "Until recently young hackers who spread viruses or launched attacks on computer networks were bent on mischief rather than money making." However, this latest report suggests such attacks are now part of a multi-billion dollar criminal industry.   Facebook is being urged to improve its default privacy settings following research that revealed members are unwittingly exposing their personal details on a mass scale to millions of strangers, putting ... themselves at risk of identity theft. IT security and control firm Sophos took a random snapshot of 200 users in the London Facebook network and found that a staggering 75 per cent allow their profiles to be viewed by any other member, regardless of whether they or not they have agreed to be friends. Even if you have previously set up your privacy settings to ensure that only friends can view your information, joining a network automatically opens your profile to every other member of the network.   The changing nature and scale of security threats will pose more strenuous challenges for security administrators as they embrace the Web 2.0 world, according to research from WatchGuard Technologies Inc. ... The security appliance vendor's Rapid Response team has been tracking attack patterns over the last five years and has identified five key threats: DNS system attacks; viruses and malware; buggy web applications; hacking for profit; and end users.   A few of my previous columns discussed my vision of creating a more secure Internet. It involved replacing the Internet's default anonymity with pervasive authentication , from the hardware initialization, ... through the OS and all applications, the user, and ending with a verifiable network stream. It is my strong belief that without a complete overhaul of default authentication, malicious hacking is going to continue indefinitely. And as expected, several readers complained about the obvious invasion of privacy my plan would entail; it's a duality I wrestle with as well. But an even bigger obstacle is the need to upgrade and replace nearly every involved software and hardware component. The computer world's normal evolutionary growth patterns don't fit nicely into my revolutionary changes. Few can afford to throw away the old and buy all new, much less have that occur across the globe all at once.
