  The good news is, you probably already know. The bad news is, you probably know too much. This article describes Service Oriented Architecture in a simple and easy to understand way that is devoid of buzzwords ... and vendor spin. It’s the introduction to SOA that you haven’t been able to find anywhere else. There are things in a business that don’t change very often. Gas stations in the U.S., for example, still sell gasoline by the gallon. Restaurants still sell meals from a menu. Dentists still sell cleanings every 6 months.   A future for mainframes in SOA

  While it is far too early to get an answer it is now possible to ask, as a serious rather than trivial question, whether there is scope to see new sales of zSeries mainframes grow into the SOA and web ... services-based market sectors as a result of new developments in integration tools, such as the recent appearance of DataDirect Technologies' major upgrade of its Shadow integration platform, for the traditionally back-office machines. Will it be enough to prove to be a positive lever on green field zSeries sales? It might still be a brave person who answered ‘yes’ right now, the opportunity now exists where the mainframe can start to play a full part in a web-services/SOA environment, running applications that can proactively participate in that environment rather than just be a passive contributor to it.   Web 2.0 investors look beyond the U.S.

  For the first half of 2007, venture capitalists poured $464 million into 101 Web 2.0-focused companies around the globe. That's a 14% increase from the first half of 2006 – an increase driven by investments ... in start-ups outside of the United States., according to data complied by Dow Jones VentureOne and Ernst & Young. VentureOne defines Web 2.0 companies as those that “have a business model that revolves around a dynamic interface facilitating participation through such methods as user-created content, networking and collaboration,” according to a spokesperson for the company. “Applications include podcasting, tagging, blogs, social networking, mashups and wikis. Technologies used in these applications include: AJAX, RSS, SOA, CSS, XHTML, Atom and rich Internet applications."   Picking the right virtualization technology requires a basic understanding of what is available out there today. Rik Van Riel has put up the virt.kernelnewbies.org page that shows a number of the existing ... virtualization methods. You might want to peruse this first to get a feel. "Bare Metal" or "Raw Iron" Basic computing today typically occurs on "Bare Metal". This would be where your Operating Systems is installed directly on a given hardware platform. This "Raw Iron" role is how most people treat computing platforms today. Some higher end hardware platforms offer "Hardware Partitioning". This is where the hardware platform is divvied up between multiple parallel operating systems at the same time. The hardware platform offers up CPUs, memory, and disk to independent operating systems that then run on the resources allocated to them.
