  UK tech start-ups 'suck', Silicon investor says - Telegraph

  A team of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and venture capitalists jetted into Oxford today with the news that the UK's technology industry "absolutely sucks". Get a life, but make it a second life Admittedly ... unlike California's Silicon Valley, our own Thames Valley cannot claim to house the likes of Google, Facebook or Yahoo! But it does boast Oxford, which – if we are talking big names – is a "sufficiently famous and quaint" draw for some US hotshots. So says Paul Graham, the co-founder of Y Combinator, a seed-stage venture firm that runs a bootcamp in Silicon Valley for budding young tech entrepreneurs. Mr Graham, who sold his own start-up, Viaweb, to Yahoo! in 1998, joined a gaggle of tech founders – such as LinkedIn's Reid Hoffman, and industry experts, including Google's head of special initiatives Chris Sacca – at Oxford's Said Business School today.   Web 2.0 investors look beyond the U.S.

  For the first half of 2007, venture capitalists poured $464 million into 101 Web 2.0-focused companies around the globe. That's a 14% increase from the first half of 2006 – an increase driven by investments ... in start-ups outside of the United States., according to data complied by Dow Jones VentureOne and Ernst & Young. VentureOne defines Web 2.0 companies as those that “have a business model that revolves around a dynamic interface facilitating participation through such methods as user-created content, networking and collaboration,” according to a spokesperson for the company. “Applications include podcasting, tagging, blogs, social networking, mashups and wikis. Technologies used in these applications include: AJAX, RSS, SOA, CSS, XHTML, Atom and rich Internet applications."   The “Web 2.0” start-up scene has spread beyond its San Francisco Bay homeland as investors pump funds into new internet businesses in Europe and Israel in their search for the next Facebook or YouTube. ... Investors directed a record $464.2 million (£232.2 million) into 101 Web 2.0 deals worldwide in the first half of the year, according to Dow Jones VentureOne and Ernst & Young LLP, up more than 7 per cent from the same period last year. Web 2.0 companies generally feature user-created content and services that allow users to communicate and collaborate. Typical applications include podcasts, blogs, social networks, mashups and wikis. However, a 14 per cent rise in the number of Web 2.0 deals was entirely attributable to the rising interest in the sector outside America – and especially in Europe and Israel – the researchers added.
