  Britons squash plans for double-decker trains

  Plans for double-decker trains are set to be ditched by the Government because Britons are getting bigger. Not only are railway passengers getting wider, but they are also getting taller - according to ... ergonomic tests carried out by Network Rail. It reached its conclusions after being asked by the Department for Transport to carry out a study on the viability of double-decker trains as a solution to overcrowding on busy commuter lines. The Government has come under increasing pressure because of overcrowding on some lines and Mike Mitchell, the Department for Transport's railway chief, caused outrage earlier this year when he said it was unrealistic for passengers to expect a seat. Commonly used on suburban lines on the Continent, double-decker trains were identified as a potential solution by Alistair Darling, the former Transport Secretary.   A team of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and venture capitalists jetted into Oxford today with the news that the UK's technology industry "absolutely sucks". Get a life, but make it a second life Admittedly ... unlike California's Silicon Valley, our own Thames Valley cannot claim to house the likes of Google, Facebook or Yahoo! But it does boast Oxford, which – if we are talking big names – is a "sufficiently famous and quaint" draw for some US hotshots. So says Paul Graham, the co-founder of Y Combinator, a seed-stage venture firm that runs a bootcamp in Silicon Valley for budding young tech entrepreneurs.   The bill looms for Broadband Britain

Since then Openreach, as that new business became known, has handed over control of more than 3m of the UK's near 30m phone lines to rivals such as Carphone Warehouse's TalkTalk and Tiscali, so they can provide services from home telephony and broadband internet access to TV. A further 5m BT lines are being rented by rivals, using BT's wholesale product, for broadband services. As a result, the UK residential telephony market is fast becoming one of the most competitive in the world. When it comes to technology, the US is determined to stay ahead of the game. "Five ... nine, five ten," said the research student, pushing down a laptop button to seal the measurement. "That's your height." "Spot on," I said. "OK, we're freezing you now," interjected another student, studying his computer screen. "So we have height and tracking and your gait DNA". "Gait DNA?" I interrupted, raising my head, so inadvertently my full face was caught on a video camera. "Have we got that?" asked their teacher Professor Rama Chellappa.
