  Yahoo Embraces The Semantic Web - Expect The Internet To Organize Itself In A Hurry

  Yahoo’s embrace of all things open continues today - expect an announcement in an hour or so that they are expanding their Open Search Platform that we wrote about last month. In that previous announcement, ... Yahoo talked about their plans to allow third parties to alter and enhance search results with structured data that may be useful to users. Today, they’ll give more details on the developer platform and will announce support for a number of semantic web standards. What does all this mean? It means we can expect the web to get itself organized, in a hurry. At stake is a significant amount of traffic from Yahoo search, and anyone else that may choose to build applications on top of this data. Yahoo’s support for semantic web standards like RDF and microformats is exactly the incentive websites need to adopt them.   A little more than two months after we first reported rumors about Yahoo’s new social network Mosh, the company has given us a preview of a social network with a slightly different name: Mash . The service ... includes features common to Facebook, MySpace, and My Yahoo. You can load a set of modules onto your profile page and move them around drag-and-drop style. The modules include Flickr RSS, Ego Boost, Common Friends, MyMoshLog2, Blog Module (RSS 2.0), Asteroids, Astrology, PimpMyPet, Hover, Kaleidescope, Guestbook, and My Stuff. The modules gallery also states that “in the coming months we’re going to open up our module development platform to 3rd party developers,” which suggests that Mash will be following in Facebook’s footsteps at least to some extent (it will be interesting to see whether there will be canvas-like pages, too).   Google Top Worldwide Search Engine; Baidu Beats Microsoft

Google tops the list, with nearly five times as many searches ... as nearest competitor Yahoo. But the worldwide list does focus attention on some non-US based search players like Baidu and NHN, which owns Korea's Naver. It also shows Asia-Pacific as the region with the most searchers and searches happening. Here's the list, with figures rounded, showing the number of searches that happened in August 2007 on each search network: Google Sites: 37.1 billion (5 billion at YouTube) Yahoo Sites: 8.5 billion Baidu.com: 3.3 billion Microsoft Sites: 2.2 billion NHN Corporation: 2.0 billion eBay:1.3 billion Time Warner Network [AOL]: 1.2 billion Ask Network: 743 million Fox Interactive Media: 683 million Lycos, Inc: 441 million I find it odd that eBay is included in the list.
