For decades, doctors have used pacemakers to regulate the heart. Now they're implanting similar devices into the brain.
Thousands of patients with the

most serious cases of Parkinson's disease and epilepsy have received the devices since they obtained approval in 1997 from the Food and Drug Administration . Hundreds more are slated to take part in clinical trials to see if the pacemakers' electrical impulses can control chronic pain, depression and even obesity.
In America, over 1.2 million people suffering from depression have found that traditional medications don't work for them, say makers of the device. About 250,000 epileptics are in the same situation, as are nearly 100,000 sufferers of Parkinson's disease.
So far, early results are positive. Dr. Rajesh Pahwa, an associate professor of neurology at , has implanted hundreds of the devices, finding that 80 percent of his pacemakered patients with Parkinson's showed significant improvement -- with a 40 percent reduction in need

STEAM AND MIRRORS: A compact linear Fresnel reflector, like Ausra's plant in Australia pictured here, uses lines of mirrors to focus the sun's rays on

an overhead trough, turning water into steam to generate electricity.
In the often cloudless American Southwest, the sun pours more than eight kilowatt-hours* per square meter of its energy onto the landscape. Vast parabolic mirrors in the heart of California's Mojave Desert concentrate this solar energy to heat special oil to around 750 degrees Fahrenheit (400 degrees Celsius). This hot oil transfers its heat to water, vaporizing it, and then that steam turns a turbine to produce electricity. All told, nine such mirror fields, known as concentrating solar power plants, supply 350 megawatts of electricity yearly.
In the face of mounting concern about climate change, alternatives to coal and natural gas combustion such as these never seemed more attractive. And with the bounty of the sun waiting to be captured near fast-growing major ce

Welcome to the Electrical Safety Forum www. Electrical-Safety.com Within this area our focus will be on the belief in Improving Safety through Education.
...
We firmly believe that only through this path can this elusive goal even be approached. If nothing else is accomplished here let it be that you are left with some basic principles for safety and a perhaps a more Inquisitive Nature. It is not our Intent or purpose to suggest this Site as a Source for answers, but more like a Forum for raising questions and a Portal to possible answers. Within these pages our Goals are to: Increase Public Awareness of the Dangers involved in not having a Healthy Respect for Electricity. Include Information on New Technologies and provide some insight into advantages and necessities of Continuing Education. Compile and Categorize a List of Resources and Information related to any of the above topics.
