#6 -- Intel Introduces Chip That Could Commoditize RFID Readers Intel introduced its first RFID reader chip, the R1000, which consolidates several RFID reading and data processing functions that had historically ... been performed by multiple processors connected together on a circuit board. The Intel release is significant for two reasons: first, it reduces the components, complexity, and cost necessary to produce a Gen2 UHF RFID reader. Intel estimated the chip could lead to reader costs falling by half. A bold prediction to be sure, but less so when one considers Intel's role in the history of PC development. The second reason the R1000 is significant is that Intel's investment to develop and produce the RFID chip suggests the company has confidence in the strength and growth of RFID technology. All of these chips include the company’s new transistor formula and 45 nanometer (nm) manufacturing design that boost a PC’s speed, reduce its electricity needs, save on battery life, help the environment and come in smaller packages for more fashionable and compact computer designs. With the introduction of the new processors, Intel will offer 32 desktop, laptop and server processors based on these innovations. In April 1965 a 36-year old electronics buff jotted down his thoughts on the future of the juvenile silicon chip industry. Writing in a "throw-away" journal, Gordon Moore accurately imagined a future filled ... with mobile phones, home computers, and even intelligent cars. But it was a much more prosaic prediction that has come to dominate his life and the industry that he helped found. "I could see a change coming that the electronics were going to get significantly cheaper," says the co-founder of Intel, the largest maker of computer chips. In the article in Electronics Magazine, he predicted that the number of transistors on a silicon chip would double every year for ten years. He later revised the forecast to doubling every two years or so, as the initial breakneck speed of development and shrinkage waned. Intel gains, AMD drops in closely watched tally of world's 500 fastest computers - International Herald Tribune 

NEW YORK : IBM Corp. and Intel Corp. improved their standings Monday in the newest tally of the world's fastest 500 computers, a closely watched measure of progress in the industry. The list, published ... twice a year by academic researchers, once again was topped by an IBM Corp. supercomputer in the Lawrence Livermore national nuclear lab. The BlueGene/L system, as it is known, was recently upgraded and showed the ability to perform at 478 teraflops — 478 trillion calculations per second. That's tens of thousands of times faster than your average desktop PC today. The No. 2 performer was an IBM supercomputer in a German research center that came in at 167 teraflops. No. 3 was a 127-teraflop system made by Silicon Graphics Inc. for the New Mexico Computing Applications Center. For the first time, India placed a machine in the top 10: a 118-teraflop Hewlett-Packard Co. system in a research center run by Tata Sons Ltd. in Pune, India.
