behaviour in the workplace and presents new challenges for managers. Where do you draw the line? Is it okay to send the occasional personal email at work? What about a little internet shopping? But what about spending time on social networking sites, playing online games, downloading pirated movies and music, reading and sending inappropriate emails, gambling online or downloading porn? The internet has created new opportunities for mischief and new challenges for managers. (PDF) by MessageLabs' Matt Charman. Rate this article! This article was submitted by a reader of E&T . February 4, 2008 (Computerworld) Corporate IT managers who have long resisted implementing Web 2.0 technologies such as wikis, blogs and social networks

will likely start adding them to their priority lists this year, according to a report released last week by Forrester Research Inc. Of 119 companies that the research firm surveyed in the third quarter of 2007, 42% said they had no plans to invest in Web 2.0 technology. But Forrester predicts that about half of those companies will add it to their priority lists by the end of this year. Many of those firms had long called Web 2.0 technology "frivolous," but they will "take their heads out of the sand" this year, Forrester said. "Is it the year for the perfect storm, where everything comes together?" said Josh Hilliker, community manager for Intel Corp.'s vPro Expert Center social community. "If you look at the tools that are out there and the business applicability, it is absolutely that time." Intel launched the online community five

Introduction Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) has been around for 20 years, but interest within the United States has only increased

in the last five years. ITIL is becoming the next big thing in Information Technology. It is the new industry buzz-word, the new certification, the new conference, and the new idea that the IT world feels it needs. This paper will describe the origin of ITIL, who controls the ITIL contents, who are the biggest users of ITIL, and why you should care about it. Throughout this paper, it will be important for you to remember that ITIL describes a framework of processes for the management of IT. Because it is a framework, ITIL does not describe in great detail how any particular process should be implemented. Where did ITIL come from? ITIL started in the late 1980s when the British Central Computer and Telecommunication Agency (CCTA), now called the Office of Government Commerce (OGC), made a decision that there should be a better way for I

organizations don’t really understand why their IT projects go down. As a result, failures persist, with some organizations even proclaiming, “We’re not at fault because we did everything right.” Such attitudes are misguided. In his recent report, titled “ ,” Lewis Cardin , a former CIO and currently senior analyst at Forrester Research, states: Firms commonly use three metrics to decide whether a project effort is successful: Did the project meet its schedule, stay within budget, and deliver on requirements?… Firms use these same measurements to establish project success rates simply because they are so obvious and business execs easily understand them. IT execs often get measured on these outcomes and are held accountable for the results delivered by project managers; when a project is deemed a failure, this accountability can be ba

to process management could cure many problems. Despite how much governments around the world invest in IT to improve effectiveness and efficiency, public confidence in their ability to deliver large (£100m upwards) and complex IT projects remains poor. Public sector’s recent project history is a litany of budget-busting. For example, UK Government’s Department for Work and Pensions Central Payment System’s initial budget was £90m, with an estimated final cost of £153m when it was cancelled. The criminal justice system had an initial budget of £234m and estimated final costs of £500m when full roll-out was cancelled. The Child Support Agency system had an initial budget of £427m, and final cost of £526m. And the NATS Swanwick system had a £337m budget with a near £150m overrun. For IT projects, an industry study by the Standish Group
