age, cite a list of attitudes to avoid, in an effort to get their clients on track toward a good life. The “Seven Deadly Sins” were first developed by John Cassian in the 5th Century, and then refined by Pope Gregory a hundred years later. This list inspires poets, artists, blog writers and comedians, among others, to this day. A more positive spin on the list, called the “Seven Holy Virtues,” was developed by Aurelius Clemens Prudentius in his epic poem Psychomachia around 410 AD. Ultimately, the principles of both the Seven Deadly Sins and their heavenly counterparts are intended to provide guidelines to better relationships. Based on our research and experience over the past 20 years in the electronics manufacturing industry, it is my belief the outsourcing relationship as practiced in the 21st Century is fundamentally broken. and aero-engines. The company, based in Market Bosworth, a small town in the English Midlands, was set up in 1937 by Walter Churchill, a pilot-cum-engineer who during the second world war flew Spitfires and Hurricanes from a landing strip next to the plant. The family can trace a link to Winston Churchill. Walter’s grandson Andrew, the current managing director, says Britain could today use some of his grandfather’s derring-do and borrow from the wartime leader’s bulldog spirit to boost its prowess as a manufacturing power. “Manufacturing is a sector of the economy that requires high skills and provides a lot of innovation. It’s vital that we do more to strengthen this area of business rather than see it fall away,” says Mr Churchill. His view fits into a debate about whether Britain should attempt to “rebalance” its economy back tow

team was asking this question every day. Our Japanese competition was selling superior products at much lower prices, and we couldn t figure out how they did it. We knew we needed to make dramatic changes or close up shop, but we didn t know what to change. As far as we could tell, we were doing everything right. We relied on optimized forecasting methods to determine economic lot sizes, and we used the latest MRP (Manufacturing Requirements Planning) software to launch daily schedules into the plant. We had a sophisticated computer system that analyzed QC results and process parameters, to pinpoint the causes of defects. We had some quality problems, and it took a month to fill most orders. In any given week, we were able to pack out about 60% of the planned line items for the week. But this was okay, because the other 40% of the

Activity in the UK's manufacturing sector remains healthy despite the turbulence in financial markets, a snapshot survey shows today.
The CBI's monthly

industrial trends report showed that the balance of companies reporting above normal levels in their order books was higher than those reporting below normal levels. The balance of 6% was slightly lower than last month's 12-year high, but remains higher than the average for the first half of 2007.
"This survey took place against the backdrop of severe turbulence and uncertainty in the financial markets and rising interest rates for borrowing. Nevertheless the manufacturing sector has continued to show encouraging signs of growth and the wider economy beyond the financial markets is in good shape," said Ian McCafferty, chief economic adviser at the CBI.
Buoyancy in the sector was underpinned by strong demand for capital goods - a balance of +17% of firms reported order books were above normal rather than below.
In contrast, a balance

ABS Biodiesel has been given the go-ahead to build a new biofuel production facility in Avonmouth Docks following a decision by Bristol City Council planning

department (3rd October). The company will be investing over £21m in the new 24,500 sq ft facility, which will cover three acres of undeveloped land at Bristol Port. When completed it will be, says the company, the UK’s largest biodiesel production facility. Avonmouth Port in Bristol was chosen as the prime location for the plant due to its close proximity to major oil terminals and refineries, as well its location in an area of high feedstock production. The site will initially produce approximately 225,000 tonnes of biodiesel, with the capacity of the site enabling this to be increased to 500,000 tonnes. The company has already pre-sold its first and second year capacity, even before the development of the plant commences. Alan Bailey, Business Development Director, said: “We are delighted to have secured planning permission at

centre. But now, as Britain’s leading banks scramble to repair their finances and the City faces big cutbacks, our reliance on a small corner of London for so much — jobs, tax revenues and the trickle-down of cash — seems to some just a little risky. Sir John Rose, the chief executive of Rolls-Royce, has taken the opportunity to challenge the conventional wisdom that Britain should be the poster-child for the “post-industrial society”. He points to the 1 million manufacturing jobs that have been lost in ten years and calls on the Government to stop treating manufacturing as a relic of the industrial revolution. Making things can be good business and can be done far from London and the hotspots of the South East. It may not be realistic for Britain to regain its status as “an industrial leader” as Sir John hopes. But the worry is tha

and construction will arguably increase its exposure to the economic downturn. Italy's problems - high public sector deficits and rising inflation - are equally well documented. As for the UK, Warren Buffett, the billionaire investor, has drawn attention to the risk that the economy's structure may make it vulnerable to any US-led recession. This might, therefore, be a time for gloom and pessimism but the positive side of the coin is that for the UK the credit crisis gives a unique opportunity to start answering fundamental questions about how the country should earn its living in the 21st century. We have little time left to resolve this issue but the credit crisis may provide the stimulus we need to come up with answers to a question that has defeated policymakers for more than 50 years. Our problems began with the mistaken belief that
