The third Podcast in the Nanotechnology Victoria Series focuses on Nanotechnology investment and commercialisation and presents the views of six key stakeholders
...
on the crucial issues around how Nanotechnology can be taken from the laboratory and translated into successful commercial outcomes. This podcast describes the experiences of people at different stages of the investment cycle and demonstrates that a key element for success is a big market opportunity, effective execution and a passionate team. In this edition of AZoNano News, as well as bringing you the latest news from the international Nanotechnology industry, we'll hear how nanotechnology is helping to prevent heart attacks, reducing the threat of friendly fire in battle and how new technology is helping to make building materials that repair themselves. In this week's interview AZoNano's David Freund talks with Tomas Bauer from Silex Microsystems about their capabilities and the future of MEMS and nanotechnologies.. In his

Over the whole market, permanent jobs were up a healthy 30% on this time last year, and contractor positions were up 14%. Compared to the last quarter
...
of 2007, though, permanent jobs rose only slightly, and contractor jobs fell by 11%. So there is some evidence of recent retrenchment, but the market is still a lot healthier than it was a year ago. Smith summarises, "This signals a holding pattern by businesses. We are going to continue, we are not going to invest dramatically, but we need some investment because that is what our competitors are doing." The investment caution shows most clearly in the salaries on offer, which were up just 1.4% from a year ago, the second lowest increase in the past four years. In this respect the IT industry is mirroring the economy generally, with wages inflation nationally falling. It was down to 3.7% at the last count. Bucking this trend, rates offered to IT contractors have continued to rise, and are up by nearly 3% on a year ago on average. Senior

The Knowledge Tools group started in July, 2004. Out mission is to improve the data/human interface . People at work have to cope with large, confusing

data sets in order to get their job done and make decisions. We want to build tools to help these people cope with data complexity. To build these tools, we must make advances in three areas: Programming languages/tools Machine learning algorithms that scale to large data sets User interfaces and visualization for interacting with data We believe that several different types of knowledge workers can benefit from our tools: Security analysts must monitor large event logs and gigantic flows of network traffic System administrators need to understand the complex activity of large server farms Decision makers want to have relevant information at their fingertips, without having to search To make research progress, we build prototype tools and get them into the hands of these types of users. We build many of our prototype tools on top of Iro
