September 21, 2007 Microformats: Toward a Semantic Web By Sean Michael Kerner In the beginning of the Internet revolution, being connected was all about the simple hyperlink. Like magic with one click ... a Web browser could be transported anywhere on the Internet that content lives. But what about context? What about connecting related information and content in a semantic context? The hyperlink of the early era isn't enough. Enter Microformats , which offer the promise of helping Web content owners enable users to connect the disparate dots that connect content in a semantic way. To be more precise and borrowing from the official Microformats.org definition, "Microformats are small bits of HTML that represent things like people, events, tags, etc. in Web pages." Though the term "microformats" may not yet be mainstream, mainstream vendors have taken notice. BBC's new media boss talks web 3.0 - Networks - Breaking Business and Technology News at silicon.com 

Future media and technology director at the BBC, Ashley Highfield, has further fleshed out the organisation's plans to work with and distribute content digitally, admitting which areas are hardest and ... easiest to tackle and pointing towards a future web 3.0. The BBC had been "caught a bit out of sync with audience demand" for video over the web since 2005 but it is now well-positioned, said Highfield, speaking at a Prince's Trust Technology Leadership Group event yesterday. Understandably, he spoke about initiatives such as the Beeb's on-demand TV service iPlayer , which puts a rolling seven days' worth of BBC TV content on tap to anyone online in the UK. A public beta will be available from 27 July and Highfield promised future versions that would allow viewing via TV sets, programme stacking and - answering some early critics - use over mobiles, Macs and PCs running Windows Vista . NEW YORK : How often have you wasted time searching through page after page of e-mail messages, Web sites, notes, news feeds and YouTube videos on your computer, trying to find an important item? If the ... answer is "too often," a company in San Francisco, Radar Networks, is testing a free, Web-based application, called Twine, that may provide some robotic secretarial help in organizing and retrieving documents. Twine, at twine.com, can scan almost any electronic document for the names of people, places, businesses and many other entities that its algorithms recognize. Then it does something unusual: it automatically tags or marks all of these items in orange and transfers them to an index on the right side of the screen. This index grows with every document you view, as the program adds subjects that it can recognize or infer from their context. Yahoo Embraces The Semantic Web - Expect The Internet To Organize Itself In A Hurry 

Yahoo’s embrace of all things open continues today - expect an announcement in an hour or so that they are expanding their Open Search Platform that we wrote about last month. In that previous announcement, ... Yahoo talked about their plans to allow third parties to alter and enhance search results with structured data that may be useful to users. Today, they’ll give more details on the developer platform and will announce support for a number of semantic web standards. What does all this mean? It means we can expect the web to get itself organized, in a hurry. At stake is a significant amount of traffic from Yahoo search, and anyone else that may choose to build applications on top of this data. Yahoo’s support for semantic web standards like RDF and microformats is exactly the incentive websites need to adopt them. But researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology using wikis and the Semantic Web look to change the way people map and navigate their cities. The Wiki City project, run by MIT's SENSEable City Laboratory , aims to apply wiki technology to the mapmaking process. The project's ultimate product will permit anyone to upload content to a map and utilize Semantic Web principles to cross search multiple layers of information. Wiki City Rome , an early incarnation of the project's user-generated maps, used GPS and cell phone data to produce a real-time map during an all-night festival held in the city on Sept. 8.
