Sony Corp. will debut the world's first organic electroluminescent televisions on the domestic market Dec. 1, hoping to take the lead in development of

the next-generation flat-panel TVs, the electronics giant said Monday.
The 11-inch model, only 3 mm thick and weighing 2 kg, will hit the market with a proposed retail price of ¥200,000.
For Sony, which was hit hard by a massive recall of its defective lithium-ion batteries last year and falling sales in its struggling game divisions, becoming the world's first mass-producer of organic EL TVs was a long-cherished goal.
"I hope the introduction of the world's first organic EL TV will be a symbol of Sony's revival as a technology-oriented company and thus will make us go on the offensive," Sony President Ryoji Chubachi told reporters at the firm's Tokyo headquarters.
In late August, Sharp Corp. unveiled a prototype of the world's thinnest LCD television, just 2 cm thick, in an apparent effort to show its technological edge over organi

Only one in five households in Western Europe own an HD TV today, and while that figure is expected to jump to 85 per cent by 2012, most of us will still

be watching standard-definition content. So claims market watcher Screen Digest, which pinpointed the poor penetration of HD into Europe on a sparsity of free-to-view HD TV channels, especially over terrestrial broadcast networks. Only Sweden has terrestrially broadcast HD channels, though the UK and France may soon follow suit. That leaves the vast majority of Europe's 100 HD channels only available through satellite and a much smaller proportion through cable. Today, only 1.7 per cent of households in Western Europe have the kit to receive and watch HD broadcasts. Come 2012 that figure will have risen to just under 17 per cent. We'll have to wait until 2015 for the widespread availability of free-to-air HD channels to boost HD viewing into the mainstream, Screen Digest forecast. By 2018, however, we won't be watching anything else,

Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) have become the overwhelming choice for both desktop and mobile computing because they offer the best combination of image

quality, price, and power efficiency of the current display technologies. But LCDs still have a lot of room for improvement, as they only transmit 5-10 percent of the total backlight to the user, and can account for up to 30 percent of the total power consumption of a laptop. In this week's Nature Photonics , researchers from Microsoft and the University of Washington report a new display technology called "telescopic pixel" that transmits 36 percent of backlight radiation. The new pixel design is based on a tried-and-true technology: the optical telescope. Each pixel consists of two opposing mirrors where the primary mirror can change shape under an applied voltage. When the pixel is off, the primary and secondary mirrors are parallel and reflect all of the incoming light back into the light source. When the pixel is on, the primary
